The Pennsic Staff welcomes the participation of those gentles with disabilities.
Reasonable attempts will be made to honor and fulfill any requests for basic accommodations and services as we attempt to make the Pennsic experience a good one for everyone. Pennsic is a primitive camping event, and access to modern facilities is limited, so please plan accordingly.
Services such as camping space, electrical medical device recharging, and requests for accessible port-a-john placement will be made available through this office.
At Pennsic, Disability Services will hold office hours in the Town Hall across from the camp store. We would also like to pursue coordinating sign language interpreting at classes & courts for the hearing impaired. Please contact the Disability Services Office if you are interested in assisting with or if you have need of these services.
Registering for the Disabilities Camping Area
Gentles wishing to camp in the disabilities camping area need to pre-register with both this office and Coopers Lake Campground! Pre-registration with the Disability Services Coordinator must be made by June 1, 2013 in order to allocate the land that is available. (Pre-registration with the campground must be made as usual by June 9, 2013.) Please fill out the Disabilities Camping pre-registration form available on-line, or contact the Coordinator to request one.
Once you have pre-registered with the Disability Services Coordinator and have received confirmation of such, you may list “Disabilities Camping” on your Coopers pre-registration as the group you are camping with. Please note that, unless you have completed both pre-registrations and received confirmation, you are not guaranteed space in this area. Also, space is limited to disabled individuals and those persons camping in the same tents as them. Campers and RV’s are not permitted in the disabilities camping area, but there are a limited number of electrical outlets to use for essential medical devices.
Please remember that given Pennsic’s location, power outages do occur so a constant electrical supply cannot be guaranteed.
Those gentles who will not be camping in the disabilities camping area (or other areas with electricity) and need power to recharge scooters or battery recharging for medically necessary devices should contact Disability Services prior to Pennsic, by July 9th.
There are a limited number of accessible porta-john units, many of which will be placed in heavily traveled areas. If you will not be camping in the disabilities camping area but need one of these units, you MUST let us know before Pennsic so that we can try to honor your request for the limited number of units placed elsewhere on the campground. Requests must be made by July 9th.
Transportation is provided by school buses on set routes. There will be a limited number of Disability Assistance Road Transport (D.A.R.T.) carts labeled with the International Sign for Handicap Assistance, following these routes to assist individuals who are unable to use the buses. They will pick up at each bus stop, at the Watch tent and at the Town Hall, and drop off at the nearest bus stop to your destination. PLEASE NOTE-There are no prearranged rides, no point to point transit and no calling a cart to come pick up an individual.
Those wishing to park in the disabilities parking area will be required to have a valid state/provincial disabilities plate or hang tag on their car. Disability Services at Pennsic will issue disability labels to attach to your car’s Pennsic hang tag for any temporarily disabled individuals (ie. a person on crutches) who are in need of handicapped parking.
There will be NO Medical Waivers issued for parking vehicles in camp. All vehicles must be parked in either Handicapped Parking or regular parking. No Exceptions!
Service animals as defined by the ADA are permitted. Pets are not. Service animal owners are responsible for picking up and properly disposing of the animals’ waste. They are responsible for their animal’s behavior. Owners of animals that are not under control may be required to remove them from the site.
